Project Size: 4,800 square feet
Project Completion: 2008
The owners of this Vancouver home were attracted to the functional aesthetic offered by modernist precedents, as well as open floor plans and the characteristic blurring of indoor/outdoor boundaries often explored in the design of modernist homes. Based upon the verticality of the site, there was also potential for capturing views of Vancouver’s skyline and the Burrard Inlet.
The home is composed of two volumes, one of brick and the other of steel, linked by a glazed vertical element that reveals the main circulatory core within. Ribbons of structural glazing punctuate building elevations to maximize views. While the steel volume contains open plan living spaces, the brick volume acts as a functional hub. Laundry, kitchen and pantry are efficiently compressed into the brick volume, allowing a more fluid use of the interior space and its linkages to outdoor terraces found on each of the house’s three storeys.
