Project Size: 5,300 sq ft.
Project Completion: 2003
The site, in a new subdivision in the British Properties, is very steeply sloped from the front property line and boasts outstanding city and ocean views. Design guidelines specifying a shingle style exterior, municipal height restrictions and the extreme site topography resulted in a design concept for the house: the "big roof.” The single-gabled roof is used as a scaling device to reduce the height of the building from the rear while still presenting a strong form at the street. In order to keep the largest mass of the building low at the back yet still maintain some presence of massing at the front elevation, the third storey of the building is contained within the volume of the big roof. The vaulted main floor living room and entry foyer sit 1 ½ stories high under the second half of the roof. Access to the main floor is via exterior stairs within a covered skylit porch off the sunken garden/auto court. |
