This residence is situated on a pie-shaped lot in West Vancouver with a sixty-foot frontage that drops to thirty-six feet at the rear. The principal structural floor and wall elements were reused while the living spaces were relocated to the upper floor to make way for a two-car garage on the ground level. To compensate for the lack of ground contact at the upper floor, the design includes an all-weather covered porch. In addition to extending the living space to the outside environment, the porch provides privacy from the street and connects the house to the outdoor garden space. Dramatic, light-filled vaulted ceilings are employed throughout the upper floor to increase the sense of spaciousness. A large skylight is placed over the staircase to bring light into the entry foyer and the centre of the home. The introduction of an open plan breathes new life into this old home, facilitating the modern west coast lifestyle.
