Seeking to reflect a casual west coast lifestyle, the owners desired a house that would embrace notions of simplicity and openness by functioning well both formally and informally. The plan, which locates the living, dining, media and kitchen in close proximity, fosters this dual function while the expressive post and beam structure defines the spaces. Sliding window walls, situated between the posts, connect the interior to exterior terraces and porches. Upon arrival, a continuous internal stair bridges the auto court and two living levels to the upper garden. Movement up and down the stair reveals the essence of the steep site.
