Modifications to this 1950's post and beam house attempt to mediate between the west coast forest and ocean harbour while providing a backdrop for the display of art and sculpture. The gallery renovation exposed two existing timber posts which define a structural rhythm in an otherwise open space. The transom windows between the beams admit discrete northern light and emphasize the horizontal roof which extends from inside to outside. A vertical entry skylight and window wall captures views of towering cedar trees just meters away. Curving stone terraces on the ocean side establish connections between the gallery, master bedroom wing and steep, rocky outcroppings. A lotus pond collects rainwater which spills over a waterfall into a granite reflecting pool below.
