Project Size: 2400 sq ft.
Project Completion: 2005

Situated on the steep eastern shore of an alpine lake, this contemporary home’s refined aesthetic stands in counterpoint to the typical log aesthetic commonly found in the ski resort town.

The severity of the property’s grade change and the client’s desire for a connection between the living spaces and the shore led to an inverted plan; entry to the home is on the upper bedroom level and a delicate steel and glass stair at the end of the sky lit galleria hallway leads one down to the living, kitchen and dining spaces on the lower level. In fair weather, the vaulted living space and adjacent dining area open fully to the generous West-facing terrace by way of full-width sliding glass walls. The experience of the lake and forest setting is unimpeded by building structure.

Minimal, modern details are softened by the incorporation of rich and tactile materials such as slate, stone and deep-stained Douglas fir, and provide an inviting yet neutral backdrop to the clients’ art collection.
